The standard blueprint for a fundraising event is predictable: a banquet hall, a podium, some quiet applause, and a donation bucket. But if you’re looking for Melissa “Mel” Gorsuch, you’re far more likely to find her orchestrating an experience that feels alive—soundtracked by the laughter of children and guarded by larger-than-life comic book icons.
As the force behind World of Hearts LLC, a Colorado Springs-based independent entrepreneurial venture, Mel doesn’t just host charity drives; she crafts unforgettable community experiences. And she does it by leaning into the magnetic power of the cosplay community.
"The draw to come see the superheroes and take pics with them is definitely a powerful addition to all events," Mel tells us, her eyes lighting up as she talks about the dynamic shift that happens when a character steps into a room.
But to understand why Mel works with the relentless drive that she does, you have to look past the vibrant capes and the bustling crowds. You have to understand the woman behind the curtain.
Mel’s journey into this space was sparked by a mix of deep personal fandom and close-knit community ties. "Thatman and Jeetspool are dear friends," she smiles, nodding to the local cosplay fixtures. "And I love superheroes and comics. They really bring something huge to the world that makes people happy, no matter their age."
Seeing how those characters could break down walls, Mel realized she could bridge the gap between local businesses and critical causes. World of Hearts partners with local venues to create hyper-focused, engaging fundraising experiences. Because her mission is expansive, her approach to cosplay is highly intentional. "We choose specific characters to match the mission," she notes. "They don’t all tie into each individual fundraising experience."
The model is working. This past spring alone, Mel’s unique curation brought the Colorado Springs community together for a rapid-fire series of diverse events—from the Glow of Hope Night at Local Legends Nail Spa benefiting the Lotus Foundation, to a lively Blingo Bingo at Susanna’s Comfort Cuisine for Camp Corral, and a thrilling Cocktails & Culprits night at the COS City Hub.
Through it all, Mel has realized that the desire to do good is everywhere; it just needs the right catalyst. "Looking back, the most important thing I’ve learned is that there are tons of impact partners out there, big and small," she reflects. "The way we are creating experiences, it is truly changing the fundraising world."
"Just be genuine, consistent, and tell the stories... It’s hard work, but keep going. We are all survivors, and you never know who you will impact."
Yet, changing the world isn’t a solo sport, and running an independent venture comes with its own heavy armor. When asked about her biggest hurdle, Mel doesn’t sugarcoat the reality of an independent advocate: "My biggest hurdle is funding World of Hearts LLC."
Right now, she wears almost every hat to keep the engine running, though she has a clear vision for the immediate future. "My goals for the next one to two years are to be able to have a dedicated team," she explains. "That way, I can really focus heavily on the volunteer work and growing even bigger to design even larger experiences."
The sheer breadth of the causes World of Hearts champions is staggering—supporting children, women, animals, military, first responders, the elderly, and survivors of abuse and human trafficking. But there are two areas that cut straight to the core of who Mel is: mental health and suicide prevention.
As our conversation draws to a close, the high-energy event coordinator fades into the background, and Mel shares the raw truth that fuels her endless empathy.
"I am someone who won't give up because, in my early 20s, I did try to end my life," she reveals softly, offering a moment of profound, vulnerable honesty. "I learned that it is not the option. My door is always open, my phone is always on, and no matter how dark the situation feels, there is always a way to survive."
It’s this radical authenticity that makes her a beacon in the Colorado Springs community. She isn't just raising money; she is building a fortress of solidarity for anyone who feels left in the dark.
For those looking to follow in her footsteps and make a dent in their own communities, Mel offers advice that reads like a battle cry for the empathetic soul:
"Just be genuine, consistent, and tell the stories," she says firmly. "It’s hard work, but keep going. We are all survivors, and you never know who you will impact. You got this!"
Behind every great organizer is a network of exceptional individuals who show up when the call goes out. Mel wants to extend a massive shout-out and a directive to follow two defining forces in the local community:
